A letter to Randy Lerner

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Dear Randy Lerner,

In the wake of one of the worst Browns seasons ever capped off by another Steelers championship, it is time for you to take a hard look into the mirror and discover what kind of man you really are.  How much do you care about your family, the Cleveland Browns community?

Look no further than the Rooney family in Pittsburgh when doing some soul searching.

Do you think the Rooney’s breathe anything but Steelers football?  No, because they understand they owe a great team to the city of Pittsburgh.  It means everything to them.  They love and treat their fans like they’re family, because they are family.  They understand the incredible honor it is to represent a city that lives for its football team.  They would never insult Pittsburgh by giving their time to another sports franchise.  And it shows.  It’s the reason they won six Superbowls, and two in the last four years!

Within the last 4 years you bought a professional soccer franchise overseas.  What an insult to us.  Is there an easier way to tell your family you don’t really care about them? What a blatant way to tell Browns fans that they don’t mean everything to you.

To restore the city of Cleveland with a revered Browns franchise is the honor and responsibility bestowed upon you.  How unbelievable that you turned your back on Cleveland by purchasing Ashon Villa’s soccer team.  Stop pretending you care.

Caring is not taking a month out of every 3 or 4 years, and going on an extensive coaching and GM search.  It’s about what you do in between.  If you don’t care enough to make the Browns your life, sell the team.  The Browns and this city should mean everything to you.  You should be on the verge of tears everytime you lose to Pittsburgh.  There are millions of fans who will tell you the Browns mean absolutely everything to them, and we’re just fans (maybe we care too much, but so be it).  You own the Browns.

See Randy, the Cleveland Browns aren’t just a hobby for the residents of Cleveland.  They represent this city.  At a time when we’re one of the poorest cities in the country, our political leaders corrupt, our mood dilapidated and depressed, the Cleveland Browns are the beacon of hope that can brighten the mood.  A good football team would do so much for the condition of the city’s residents.  When the Browns win, the city wins and a sense of hope is presented.  It’s a little easier to get through the week.

But instead, the lack of passion you have for this team, and the lack of love you have for your family, makes life as a Browns backer miserable.  It’s why they’re Sixburgh and we’re Zeroland.

Randy, you weren’t at coach Mangini’s press conference, you always have other business to attend to, obviously your head hasn’t been in the game since you bought a soccer franchise.  You either don’t get it, or you don’t care.

I can’t emphasize enough how you just don’t understand how much we care.  I’m not attacking, I’m pleading: sell the Browns to someone who gets it, or sell the Ashton Villa soccer team and show Cleveland how much you truly care.

You may be able to win with your soccer team by giving less than 125%, but you’ll never win Superbowls and establish the franchise we deserve that way.  Not when owners like the Rooney’s in Pittsburgh love and respect their fans as much as they do.

Being a Cleveland Browns diehard fan is what some of us will be for a lifetime, stop treating the marvelous privilege of being the owner of our beloved team a part-time job.

Sincerely,

A Cleveland Browns fan for life
